A Finish for Suitable Surfaces
A skim coat gives suitable walls and ceilings a smooth finish for decoration. Cooksey Renovation checks the existing background and agrees any preparation before work starts, with Lance coordinating the room scope, access, preparation and finishing work from start to completion.
01
Existing plaster or board is assessed for adhesion and suitability, with any needed preparation agreed first.
02
Choose the walls, ceilings and details, allowing suitable room access and proper drying time before decoration.
03
Lance coordinates preparation, skimming and related trades throughout the entire project.
Agreed Scope
Your quote sets out the surfaces to skim, their preparation, room details and any agreed repairs or related work, with final finishing requirements included.
The visit checks whether existing plaster or board can take the selected finish. Loose areas, cracks and surface condition guide the preparation. Any active damp or continuing movement needs assessment and treatment before a new skim is agreed.
Skimming covers the walls, ceilings or full room specified in your quote, over a suitable prepared background. Ceiling access and any repairs or new boardwork are discussed separately, so the agreed scope identifies preparation as well as the finish coat.
Cracks and board joints are prepared as required for the background, with beads and edge details suited to the finish. Reveals, corners and junctions are considered alongside any existing cornice, fireplace or other room features being retained.
Drying is allowed for before decorating, with guidance suited to the plaster and room conditions. Once fully dry, the first paint coat follows the chosen paint’s instructions, using a suitable mist coat or primer where specified for the new surface.
At the visit, we assess the walls and ceilings, discuss any loose areas or cracks and agree the room scope. Preparation, access and the next decorating stage inform the quote.
Before We Start
Plaster skimming cost and timing depend on the area, ceiling access, existing surface condition, preparation and drying before decoration.
The wall and ceiling area, access and amount of preparation shape the quote. Agreed repairs, edge details and any boardwork are identified alongside the skimming scope.
Preparation and skimming follow the agreed room sequence. Drying before decoration depends on the plaster, background and room conditions, with access discussed at the visit.
Old plaster, cracks and any damp are assessed before the finish is chosen. Existing room details, service changes and preparation are agreed before skimming.
Renovation Examples
The gallery shows Cooksey’s wider home renovation work. For a new skim, the background, preparation and room details are assessed at the visit before the finish is agreed.
Our Process
Lance starts with a site visit to assess the existing surfaces and agree the walls, ceilings and room details included. A written quote records preparation, repairs and the skimming scope. Any agreed service changes are coordinated before the finish, with room protection and access planned for the work. The skim is applied to the suitable prepared background, followed by drying and guidance for the next decorating stage.
Helpful Answers
These answers cover patched surfaces, socket changes, drying before painting and the underlying conditions to assess before a new skim coat to ensure a smooth, lasting finish.
Often, provided the existing background is sound enough for the chosen finish. Loose plaster, cracks and previous repairs are assessed at the visit, with suitable preparation agreed before skimming. Any further repair or boarding is recorded in the scope.
Any agreed socket or service alterations are planned before the finish coat. Lance coordinates the relevant trades, with electrical work and applicable checks recorded in the scope. Read how construction work on a home is managed for guidance on the roles and responsibilities involved.
Once the plaster is fully dry, follow the plaster and paint manufacturers' guidance for the first coat, which may be a suitable mist coat or primer. Drying depends on the product, background and room conditions, so decoration is planned around the actual surface.
A skim provides the finish coat. Causes of active damp or continuing movement need assessment and treatment before skimming is agreed. Existing cracks are reviewed to establish the appropriate preparation for the background.

We cannot recommend Lance and the team enough. From beginning to end him and the team were professional, knowledgeable and communicative. Lance did multiple visits to us before starting work to ensure the best end result, our bathroom was a difficult refurbishment to say the least, but the final result is a testament to Lance and the teams skill and determination. When the work was being completed they were clean and tidy, often worked incredibly long days and kept me informed on any changes or challenges. He worked with us to keep to our budget updated us on any additional material charges. My neighbour even commented on how friendly and polite they all were. I have already recommended Lance to multiple people but will also have them back for any other renovation we need completing in the future. I wouldn't go with anyone else now.Posted on Google![]()

They arrived on the agreed date to commence the renovation, were on time every morning, cleaned up after them every evening, and were pleasant and communicative throughout. I can’t recommend this company highly enough and would certainly use them again or recommend them to friends and family.Posted on Google![]()

Cooksey renovations and the team did an amazing job with our new kitchen and flooring. The job needed blocking up doors, windows and a fair bit of plastering. They were all really tidy and cleaned up after each day before they left. I'm so happy with the work they have done. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend Lance and his team enough! They have renovated both my bathroom and en-suite as well as repairing and replastering my living room ceiling following existing water damage. When I moved into my house, I knew there was gonna be a lot of work to do following previous leaks in the en suite and previous bad workmanship. All the team were professional, trustworthy and skilled in how they transformed my house. They kept everything clean and tidy (I even caught them hoovering my doorstep at one stage!) and made the house useable in between their working days. I had a very specific vision and they were able to make my dreams come to life and I’m so pleased with the end result. They ripped out my old suites, replaced rotten floor boards, rebuilt damaged walls and install all new paperwork. Nothing was too much trouble and they were also the most competitive quote I received. I have a kitchen and artexed ceilings to be renovated in the new year and there is no one else I would consider using. Thanks guys! I really love what you’ve done!Posted on Google![]()
