Rooms Reconnected
Choose the Opening That Changes the Layout
The right alteration depends on which rooms need to connect, what the wall supports, and how wide the new opening should be.
Supporting Wall Removal
Remove a load-bearing wall where the opening, structural requirements and approval allow the change.
Kitchen-Diner Connection
Join cooking and dining areas to create more room for preparing meals, eating together, and moving between zones.
Specified Steel Support
Install the structural support required for the opening, including a steel beam where this forms part of the design.
Internal Wall Configuration
Alter doorways and room connections to reduce awkward routes and make the ground floor easier to use.
What Is the Wall Preventing?
Use the property visit to show us how the rooms work now and what you want the new connection to improve.
Before Walls Move
The Opening Depends on More Than Width
The wall, loads above it, access, and surrounding rooms all influence the structural work, quotation, and programme.
What Goes Into the Quotation
Structural alteration costs depend on the wall, opening size, required support, and work needed around the affected area.
- Whether the wall is load-bearing
- Width of the proposed opening
- Specified structural support
Safety Sets the Sequence
Preparation and temporary support must come before wall removal, followed by the permanent structure and surrounding work.
- Protection of nearby rooms
- Access to the working area
- Temporary support requirements
Approval Comes Before Alteration
Supporting walls and new structural openings should be planned around the relevant structural requirements before alteration work begins.
- Purpose of the existing wall
- Loads carried from above
- Structural design information

Questions Behind the Wall
Five Things to Know Before Wall Removal
These answers cover wall suitability, structural support, approval requirements, disruption and what to consider before creating a new opening.
A wall cannot be judged safely by appearance alone. Its position, construction, and what it supports above all need to be considered. Walls carrying floors, roof loads or other parts of the building require an appropriate structural solution before any removal begins. The proposed opening should therefore be assessed before the work, support requirements and quotation are agreed.
A steel beam may be required where the wall carries structural loads, although the correct support depends on the property and proposed opening. RSJ is commonly used as a general term, but another steel section or structural solution may be specified. The required support should be established from the design rather than assumed before the wall is assessed.
The project may involve preparing nearby rooms, installing temporary support, forming the opening and fitting the specified permanent structure. Work may also be needed around the affected walls, floors, or ceilings. The exact scope depends on the property and opening, so the written quotation will identify the work Cooksey Renovation has included.
Wall removal creates noise, dust, and restricted access around the affected rooms. Furniture and belongings may need to be moved before work begins, and connected areas may be unavailable during key stages. The expected sequence and timescales are discussed before dates are agreed, giving you time to prepare the household for the disruption.

We cannot recommend Lance and the team enough. From beginning to end him and the team were professional, knowledgeable and communicative. Lance did multiple visits to us before starting work to ensure the best end result, our bathroom was a difficult refurbishment to say the least, but the final result is a testament to Lance and the teams skill and determination. When the work was being completed they were clean and tidy, often worked incredibly long days and kept me informed on any changes or challenges. He worked with us to keep to our budget updated us on any additional material charges. My neighbour even commented on how friendly and polite they all were. I have already recommended Lance to multiple people but will also have them back for any other renovation we need completing in the future. I wouldn't go with anyone else now.Posted on Google![]()

Recently had our Bathroom renovated by Cooksey Renovation; they did a fantastic job throughout and transformed our bathroom! The quality of their work is to a very high standard. They arrived on the agreed date to commence the renovation, were on time every morning, cleaned up after them every evening, and were pleasant and communicative throughout. I can’t recommend this company highly enough and would certainly use them again or recommend them to friends and family.Posted on Google![]()

Cooksey renovations and the team did an amazing job with our new kitchen and flooring. The job needed blocking up doors, windows and a fair bit of plastering. They were all really tidy and cleaned up after each day before they left. I'm so happy with the work they have done. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend Lance and his team enough! They have renovated both my bathroom and en-suite as well as repairing and replastering my living room ceiling following existing water damage. When I moved into my house, I knew there was gonna be a lot of work to do following previous leaks in the en suite and previous bad workmanship. All the team were professional, trustworthy and skilled in how they transformed my house. They kept everything clean and tidy (I even caught them hoovering my doorstep at one stage!) and made the house useable in between their working days. I had a very specific vision and they were able to make my dreams come to life and I’m so pleased with the end result. They ripped out my old suites, replaced rotten floor boards, rebuilt damaged walls and install all new paperwork. Nothing was too much trouble and they were also the most competitive quote I received. I have a kitchen and artexed ceilings to be renovated in the new year and there is no one else I would consider using. Thanks guys! I really love what you’ve done!Posted on Google![]()
